Chapter 6--WEB FOR RENT
Apples smell the sweetest in the mornings just as the dew starts to evaporate after sunrise. Felixâs tummy growled and grumbled all the way to an orchard not far from the willow tree.
Alexi and Skeeter Jones had joined on the search for a meal of nectar or possibly juice from ripening fruit.
Selma had other ideas. âIâm so hungry, I could drain the blood from an entire cow,â she said, flitting and darting about the boys.
âYuckâ¦that sounds nasty,â Alexi said and Felix agreed.
The best part of making it to the meadowlands; Felix had plenty of places to rest when his wings became tired, without fearing something would eat him. Although, there were still plenty of dangers, they seemed less concentrated than in the swamp.
âHave you ever tasted cow?â Selma said.
âNo.â
âThen how can you say itâs nasty? Until youâve tasted cow, youâll never know.â
At the orchard a large bee nearly four times the size of the honeybees back in the swamp, guarded the entrance. A bumbling kind of fellow, constantly bumping into leaves and twigs and he spoke with a funny accent. âThe nameâs Louie B. Toven,â he announced as the group approached. âWhat business do you have in the orchard today?â he asked and then he hummed a dramatic tune. âHumm, humm, humm, hummm.â A cloud of pollen filled the air when he straightened an old dusty wig on his head.
âJust here for a little breakfast,â Skeeter said.
âWhat? Speak up, Iâm having trouble hearing you,â Louie said and then he continued to hum. âHmm, hmm, hmm, hummmâ¦hmm, hmm, hmm, hummmm.â
âWeâre here for the nectar,â Skeeter yelled.
âYou didnât expect to just waltz in and find nectar today, did you? Youâre two months late. The blossoms dropped long ago and the apples are too green for sweet tasting juice. They wonât ripen until the days begin to shorten and the air turns cool.â
âClearly youâre notââ Alexi started.
âWhat? Speak up boy,â Louie interrupted.
âYou donât look like youâve missed a meal,â Alexi yelled.
âWatch yourselfâ¦I have half-a-mind to put a stinger through your heart.â
Felix stood in front of Alexi and motioned for him to back away. âSorry, sirâ¦he gets a little careless when his blood sugar is low. He meant no harm,â he said. âSayâ¦what would a wise fellow like you suggest for a few starving mosquitoes?â
âTry the farmerâs field. The alfalfa is in full bloom and the lavender is just popping out.â
Felix retrieved the map to his familyâs home from a pocket and held it out. âIs the field anywhere near here?â he asked pointing to a mark, possibly an x shape or a heart.
Louie snatched the map and gave it a look. âNo, not even close. After the farmerâs field, follow the ditch to the west, then fly through the fence. Thereâs a shortcut through the cow pastureâ¦that should take you close,â he said, handing the map back. âGood luck and watch out for the spider webs.â
Felix remembered avoiding webs in the swamp but he was not quite sure why. Most of them looked like trampolines, suspended between the reeds.
